Motivational Monday!

Man, time sure does fly.

My poor, neglected, blog is gathering more cobwebs than a haunted house. Now that we're starting to settle in and get organized around the homestead, coupled with my lack of full time work, I really need to buckle down.

I was thinking, just the other day, that with all the time on my hands I should have three or four books under my belt and look like an adonis. Seriously. No excuse as to why I'm not writing and exercising more.

Honestly, I'm ashamed.

I guess it just all boils down to the fact that, well, I just don't feel the motivation. It's not a very good reason, I know, but I'm facing that fact as I live with the consequences of my laziness in those two areas. Trying to get and, more importantly, stay motivated for doing both has always been one of my biggest hurdles in sticking with either.

I know, I know....baby steps. Just take baby steps. The sad thing is, though, if my steps get any more "baby", I'll be back in the womb! <rimshot> Seriously, though, I know motivation is hard sometimes and I'm curious.....how do you all do it?

How do you stay "on track"?

What keeps you motivated?

I look forward to hearing how you balance things while I chalk up and prepare to do my best Nic Walenda imitation.

Ditto! Out of work for about a year, and barely got any editing done on a finished project. Need motivation. Yes, a writing job offer would go a long ways for solving that problem.

Boredom leeches the life out of a person.

Hey, I'm the ultimate in lazy writer!
It takes deadlines. Things like NaNo and other self-imposed goals.
Plus I'm part of a private blog called Fellowship of the Dragon and we post our goals and what we accomplished every Friday. At the moment, I am cleaning up on the points and I'm not about to let that slide by not finishing my short story. (I hate to lose.)

I visualise my goals. I don't do well with deadlines - even self-imposed ones - I rebel against them!

Hey Mark,

I can understand.... I think we all can! Getting motivated is never easy, especially when we fall into a RUT... and it sounds like you're in a rut...

Believe or not if you can manage to get out and exercise it will help a lot! Go for a long power walk. Think about what you may want to write. I do so much of my writing as I walk... Ideas just pop into my head. Carry your cell phone with you and the minute something hits you ... log it into your phone. Also LOOK at your surroundings. There is SO MUCH beauty and inspiration everywhere in nature.

Don't you live in Florida? Gorgeous swaying palm trees; water of all kinds, lakes, oceans, gulf, rivers, canals... You must live by some body of water.... Breath deeply and just TAKE IT ALL IN... It should inspire you.... and know it does for me...

Don't overanalyze it just go for it!

I am definitely not the queen of "staying on track," so maybe I'm not the best person to offer advice. But I do want to say that I recently started doing some of my writing at a coffee house, and I find that a change of work scenery can help.

Hi Mark - well done on moving home and getting settled. Finding work is never easy. Michael might have a good approach ... and walking keeps us healthy ... good luck and glad to see you with a post ... cheers Hilary

I put time restrictions on myself but it seems like I always find something else "better" to do like laundry or grocery shop. I'm pitiful.

I tend to be productive in fits and spurts. My exercise is the same. Motivation can be hard to come by, and sustaining it can be even harder. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Motivation is hard sometimes but I love your list! Baby steps take patience, but they're worth it.
