ME T.V. Monday!

Things have, literally, not been the same in our house since our cable company (finally) started showing the ME T.V. network....which is a good thing. Anyone who knows me, or was around during this past A to Z Blogging Challenge knows just how much I enjoy classic television, so I'm sure you can just imagine how having a channel dedicated to those shows could keep me glued to the set.

Well, not really "glued", but I've definitely started watching a lot more t.v. than I did back when my choices were limited to the modern day deluge of reality television and politically correct dreck.

I mean, where else but in the 60s and 70s could you watch shows like....

Hogan's Heroes- A show about a World War II German prison camp run by inept Nazis where the prisoners didn't want to escape. "Hoooogannn!"

The Beverly Hillbillies- Where a backwoods family strikes oil and turns the "sleepy" little town of Beverly Hills upside down. "Wellllll doggies!"

Columbo- Way before such quirky detectives like Monk came about, you had Columbo. A short, rumpled clothes wearing, cigar smoking, seemingly absent minded police officer who was, in reality, the sharpest knife in the drawer. "Oh, just one more thing...."

Get Smart- A dimwitted goofball becomes a super-spy and survives, week after week. "Missed it by that much!"

I mean, honestly, I don't think shows like this would even be given a pilot, much less an order for a series in today's market. While many look upon these short of shows as gimmicky or simple, I think of them as great entertainment that only strives to, well, entertain....nothing more and nothing less.

I'll be writing more about ME T.V., in the hopes of alternating it with Music Monday....which will return next week.

Have a great week!

You're right - most of those shows wouldn't get the green light now.
Hogan's Heroes was such a great show.

Sounds like a channel well worth watching. I've never heard of it. I'm so sick of reality tv, and just when you think they can't be any worse, a new season of them starts. It's almost like back when the president came on every channel. No choice.

I too enjoy this station, for all my silly favorites... Batman, Wonder Woman and Star Trek to name a few. Well three. :)

I loved all those shows. I think Hogan's Heroes was my favorite.

I wonder if we get that station? (Shows you how often I turn on the TV - LOL!)

I doubt any of these shows would get the green light today. In fact, some of the best shows (now) are cancelled after only a few episodes. If it is too different than anything currently on, the network is afraid to take a chance. Bunch of babies.

@Alex: It really was and I love Werner Klemperer...he was awesome.

@Julie: It's pretty cool if you have any nostalgia for old t.v. shows. Haha, yes, I remember those days...back when you had four channels and, if the President was on, you were screwed :)

@Jeremy: Yes, definitely all the classics.

@Susan: It's still one of mine. We bought the entire run on DVD, but I still watch it nightly.

@Diane: LOL...I was the same way before I found it.

@Robin: Exactly! I really liked "Almost Human"...it was something different...and, of course, it didn't last :(

I just want to say THANK YOU for making me feel young because this was a tad bit before me. minus the hillbillies :D usually when I say shows I watched people give me the quizzed look :D

Total classics!!!! I loved watching reruns of the Lawrence Welk show when I was younger. Loved. I always wanted to be one of the performers. I love that you appreciate the classics, Mark. :)

I love MeTV too. Get Smart is always funny, but would never get made today. First, it was a parody of "Man from UNCLE" which most have never heard of and two it was very irreverent. "The Nude Bomb" comes to mind. Then again, it has Mel Brooks sense of humor which is still timeless.

Don't think we get that channel over here, but they're definitely my kind of shoes - except for Get Smarty, never heard of that!

@Tammy:Hey, always glad to help :P I get the same look, though, when I mention a lot of these shows, lol.

@Morgan: I used to love Lawrence Welk and started watching it with my Grandma, back in the day. She was a huge fan of Welk as well as Victor Borge' and those sort of shows would keep her entertained for hours. I'm glad you appreciate the classics, as well =)

@Maurice: Oh yes, I remember The Nude Bomb and loved seeing the group back together after many years. Great film :)

@Suzanne: You might be able to catch some of the episodes on YouTube or Hulu, if you get that across the pond :)

@Cathrina: Even some of the ones I thought were bad, back in the day, I love compared to today's offerings :)

I watched All of those shows and wish I had the ME channel. Don't have cable or satellite... We own all the Hogan's Heros. Have to tell you, had someone tell me once they HATED HH because it made a mockery of what actually happened. Actually, that's WHY they made the show. To lighten up what was a really weighty subject and very close to home for so many. They did it to try and help...

Mark Means said...

@Leslie: What, you've never heard of ME TV???? Check it out, stat! :)

@Lisa: If I weren't married, I wouldn't have cable either, more than likely. I'm glad I do, though, because of ME TV, of course :) Yes, that's exactly right. They made it on the understanding that the Germans would never be shown as competent....and they did a good job of that, too. In fact, most of the high ranking Nazis were played by Jews. Col. Klink, Shultz, General Burchalter.

I didn't know that about the "germans" all being Jewish! How great is that?! I love your blog for just that reason (well, among others of course) I always learn "somethinK" new, lol!
